It is undeniable that AI in education, even though still in relative infancy, has a multiplier effect on student outcomes. Are teachers becoming obsolete? Not quite.

While it is true that AI’s role is growing by the day, it is in fact not replacing teachers, but rather changing the role of teachers, an education expert says.

“We have, over the past 3 years, seen a 20% improvement in student performance, with AI and individualised learning having become the order of the day,” says Desiree Hugo, Academic Head at ADvTECH Schools.

AI in education isn’t a case of students having access to ChatGPT – it is a vastly more considered strategy leveraging proprietary tools and platforms. But debate is about more than arguing opposing views. It’s a rigorous yet supportive environment where students learn to think on their feet, research thoroughly, and communicate with clarity. For many, it begins with hesitation. That’s why our club introduces new members through informal discussions and mock debates. These non-competitive sessions provide a safe space to learn structure, build confidence, and grow at their own pace.

The first real test came at Maru-a-Pula School. Though they didn’t win, the experience was formative. Students learned how to source information properly, evaluate claims critically, and present arguments grounded in logic and evidence. They also strengthened their media literacy—developing the discernment to separate fact from misinformation in today’s digital world.

These habits extend beyond debating. In the classroom and beyond, students become more intentional, articulate, and resilient. They learn to present clearly, listen actively, and stay composed under pressure. This confidence isn’t built overnight—but the Debate Club lays the foundation.

Importantly, they also learned to lose well. Just a week after their initial loss, the team competed again—this time at Westwood International School. The challenge: present a business proposal to a panel of judges. Drawing on everything they had learned, the team walked away with a well-deserved win: Best Speaker in the Business Pitch category, and 1st Place overall . But more valuable than the trophy was what the moment represented—growth, teamwork, and resilience in action.

Going back to school can evoke feelings of joy for some but not others. One child may be filled with feelings of excitement as they anticipate having to see their friends once again at school, whilst another child may be overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety at the thought of starting school.

Although it can be quite normal to experience some degree of uneasiness at the idea of returning to school, changing school or commencing kindergarten some children find it hard to overcome these feelings of anxiety.

One may wonder why children sometimes experience back to school anxiety. Let us explore a few possible factors:

a) Going back to early mornings, homework and extracurricular activities can be quite overwhelming for some.

b) Worries about fitting in and/or making friends

c) Conflict with peers or fellow students,

d) Insecurities about their physical appearance

e) Unpleasant interactions with school personnel, e.g. teacher, coach etc.

f) Bad memories of their past experiences in school may make one think that the current year will be the same

g) Much younger learners may feel uneasy about being away from their parents and caretakers. This is very common amongst kindergarten and lower primary school pupils

h) Fear of academic failure and/or not meeting the expectations of their parents or teachers can be quite anxiety provoking.

5 drops dishwashing detergent
2 tbsp. baking soda
2 cups white vinegar

Supplies/Tools

Empty soda bottle (2 litre depending on how big you want your volcano)
Baking pan or large tray
Funnel

Instructions

1. Create Your Volcano Structure

Place the plastic bottle in a baking pan or large tray and mould your volcano around it using play dough.

Whichever technique you choose to create your volcanic cone, be sure to keep the bottle opening free of material. Use the bottle cap or cover the opening with tape to prevent any material from getting in the bottle.

2. Load Your Volcano

Using the funnel, fill the bottle two-thirds full with warm water and a few drops of food colouring. Add the dishwashing detergent and baking soda to the liquid in the bottle and give it a gentle stir.

3. Prepare for the Explosion

Before adding the final ingredient, make sure that you're wearing some sort of protection over your eyes. Keep your face away from the volcano as the mixture may shoot up quite a bit, especially if you used a smaller bottle.

What is IGCSE?

IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is the international equivalent of the General Certificate of Secondary Education that is used by schools in the United Kingdom. This international qualification was adapted by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) in 1985 for students studying outside the UK. It is now a popular international qualification for students aged 14-16.

Almost all the private schools in Botswana offer the IGCSE curriculum. IGCSE offers over 70 subjects, and the syllabus has both international and local elements. Each school offers its own selection of subjects according to the demand for the subject. There has been no school in Botswana that is able to offer all 70 of them, however, each school offers at least 15-20 subjects that students can pick from.

These compulsory subjects give students basic skills that underpin courses that will be taken at the tertiary level. The IGCSE assessment is conducted at the end of the course. Assessments include written oral, coursework, and practical assessment. This way, students are given the chance to exhibit their learning abilities.

Difference Between Core and Extension Curriculum

There is an option between Core and Extension curriculum papers in various subjects to allow students with different learning abilities to pursue a challenging subject. The Core curriculum is within the range of abilities of most students as it provides a comprehensive overview of the subject and is intended for students with grades ranging from C to G.

The Extended curriculum is intended for students who are more academically capable than the vast majority. The grades of these students range from A* to E. Under the guidance of the subject teacher, students choose between core and extended. The IGCSE examinations are held thrice a year in February/March, May/June and October/November. Students sit for examinations in international schools or at private examination centres.

Most schools opt to write exams in October, and this gives students enough time to prepare but exams can be written in February or May depending on the school’s ability. The results for exams written in February are released in May, those written in May are released in August that year and results for exams written in October are released in January the following year. Each subject is graded from A* to G, with A* being the highest grade, however the highest grade for Core curriculum papers is a C.

Well-behaved children unlike self-disciplined children need somebody to remind them what to do or how to behave.

Self-discipline is important because it helps maintain focus, acquits children with inner self and further better self-control.

Here are some tips to keep your child’s mind active during the holidays

As the school holidays approach, it’s essential to continue providing support for children’s education and mental well-being beyond the classroom. 1. Limit Screen Time

Although it may be tempting to let your kids watch TV for hours on end, it’s essential to limit screen time during the holidays. Watching TV does not allow the brain to rest properly, which can lead to fatigue and irritability. Instead, try creative activities such as house chores, painting, flashbacks to term work, building block games, or family debates on topical age-friendly subjects. This way, your children will stay engaged, and their brains will get the rest they need.

2. Get Creative with activities

During the holidays, it is easy to overspend on activities. However, being proactive and creative with activities can help prevent overspending. Back to school!

Festive season is over, back to reality!

No more late nights and late mornings.

Although some are excited to come back to school some are terribly anxious. We must channel back to old school routines; some have decided to try a different routine.

Here are some ways to help children get back to school:

Make sure they are ready for change.

“The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.” Colin Powell.

New class, new teachers, new faces …a different lunchtime than what they had last year. Prepare your children for all these changes, anxiety peaks because of all the uncertainty. Give as much information as you possibly can.

Establish routine and structure…

Get your children into school routine, maybe a week before school commences. Let them sleep earlier than holiday time and wake up early.

Avail yourself for chats…

Make time for diverse types of conversations, such as going for a walk or baking together – there may be less pressure in these situations than when sitting face-to-face. Keep in touch with them on a regular basis. Don't assume they're fine just because they appear to be.

New school, new roads!

Following its acquisition in December 2014, the ADvTECH Group, a South African listed company, and Africa's largest education provider with over 100 schools, including GABORONE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, plans to modernize the school's buildings and the road leading to it.

The GIS meets the standards of ADvTECH as the fastest-growing school in the ADVTECH group, and renovations are required to make it a world-class school. There have been several developments in terms of the curriculum and educating teachers for the new curriculum since the acquisition. There have also been many modifications in terms of classrooms and the two subjects that were included.

The school, which encompasses creche to senior learning, plans to construct a state-of-the-art facility with science labs to supplement science and mathematics classes. High-tech equipment, such as 3D printers and laser cutters, will be available in the technology laboratories, allowing students to put theory into practice and promote coding from an early age.

The GIS is not a Science and Mathematics-based school; nevertheless, it will be updated to the highest standard soon to meet the needs of a knowledge-based economy. As a major component for the pupils, the playing field will be improved for sports amenities. The entire third level will be used as an outdoor dining area for pupils.

One of the phase one projects, the road leading into the school, will be a significant milestone. The GIS is located in Block 8 (Gaborone) and connects to the city via the Kubu road, which is one of the roads that experiences traffic congestion all day. As a result, the decision was made to extend the road to include fast lanes and improve access to the school.

This will benefit not only the school community but also the surrounding community in Block 8. Residents in Ladumandumane, Block 7, Block 8, and Block 10 can access the Western Bypass Highway via this route. The Western Bypass Highway upgrade has already begun by the Botswana government.

During an interview with the Botswana Gazette, our Executive Head, Mr Gerald Hilton, wished to reassure the parents that the upgrade/investment will not be given to the parents in terms of fees. The Group has invested heavily into this.

As the new normal of COVID-19 compliance and norms will be put to the forefront, the most crucial component is health and safety, as there will be constructed over the next year to ensure safety during the upgrade.

Mitigating Violence Against Young Women and Promoting Well-being

Adolescence is the developmental period occurring between childhood and adulthood where the majority of physical maturation, cognitive abilities, and social interactions occur.

This stage in a child’s life can expose them to a variety of factors in life such as establishing more profound connections with peers; they might develop a risk-taking behaviour or even run the risk of encountering violence. When we focus on the violence that adolescents experience, it is often perpetrated in intimate relationships, at home and in the community the adolescent lives in. To add to this, young women often fall victim to dating and sexual violence.

Some of the threats and violence young women fall victim to in intimate relationships involve

· Slapping, hitting, kicking

· Forced intercourse and other forms of coercion

· Emotional and psychological violence in the form of intimidation and humiliation

In the home and school context, young women may experience violence in the manner of sexist language, verbal abuse or intimidation. Violence to young women by fellow male students also comes masked in bullying, name-calling and sexual harassment. This exposure to constant violence can lead the young woman to engage in self-harming behaviour like cutting herself, substance abuse, alcohol abuse and engaging in unsafe sexual acts.

The psychological effects involve depression, anxiety and suicide ideation. Physically the young woman runs the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, poor self-image and struggles forming stable relationships.

In efforts to lessen the threats and impact of violence on young women, parents can work at strengthening their relationship with the young woman and focus on offering emotional support to open communication channels. Parents should enforce positive discipline measures rather than those that are abusive and practice effective conflict resolution techniques.

In the school context, the curriculum should incorporate the emphasis on gender inequality and how gender stereotypes should be challenged. Furthermore, counselling services should be offered at schools for victims to lessen the threat of them resorting to dropping out of school and managing their emotions.

New Furniture Arrives At G.I.S.

Over the course of this school year, Gaborone International School (GIS) noticed areas around their school that need updating. Whether considering immediate improvements or scoping out plans for the future. The importance of school furniture is undeniable. It plays a significant role in the effectiveness of student’s learning journey. GIS’s facility is increasingly becoming a crucial part of the learning process, whereby the physical environment is considered the ‘third teacher’. “Choices of good school furnishings and finishes play a greater role as a result”, says Gerald Hilton, Executive Head of Gaborone International School.

Thus, GIS has embarked on a revamping their Primary School by purchasing 540 desks for the lower primary. The desks were installed in approximately twenty classrooms from St 1 to 3. “The excitement among the children was fantastic”, he says.

“The investment in the furniture transforms our classrooms in a 21 ^st century spaces that will result in meaningful changes for students. The mobility of the furniture enables our teachers to create environments that are conducive to collaboration and interaction. Using mobile furniture is crucial for creating multipurpose classrooms, so we have acquired lightweight furniture that can be moved smoothly throughout a classroom. Because students can quickly and easily move from clustered work areas back into rows for independent working, mobile furniture is a wise investment for the modern GIS classroom”, says Gerald.

GIS has a revamping project timeline in place. The next project is to replace all the upper Primary desks, and the school aim to complete this in 2022. “We believe that updating our furniture to accommodate changing classroom environment can help make students more productive, and will ultimately create a more positive and collaborative environment”, Gerald concludes.

We all want children to grow up in a world free from bias and discrimination, to reach for their dreams and feel that whatever they want to accomplish in life is possible. We want them to feel loved and included and never to experience the pain of rejection or exclusion, but the reality is we live in a world in which racism and other forms of bias continue to affect us. Discrimination hurts and leaves scars that can last a lifetime, affecting goals, ambitions, life choices, and feelings of self-worth.

How can we best prepare children to meet the challenges and reap the benefits of the increasingly diverse world they will inherit?

We can teach children to respect and value people regardless of the colour of their skin, their physical abilities, or the language they speak. We can also raise children to celebrate and value diversity and to be proud of themselves and their family traditions.

For some of us, the communities in which we live are rather consistent while others live in more diverse areas, with a diverse landscape. Regardless of the area or country we are raised in, it’s important to instill a sense of acceptance and tolerance within our children.

After kids leave toddlerhood behind, it’s tempting to think that kids can be kept innocent and protected for as long as possible. However, once kids learn a language well enough to communicate back and forth with others, they begin interacting with many people outside their immediate family and learn more about the wider world around them.

Children need examples of others who are open and accepting of difference because they are heavily influenced by the behaviours of the adults they interact with. Grandparents and parents can play an active role in shaping their children’s behaviours, by helping them to be more accepting of and kind toward those who look different from them.

They also tend to base their stereotyping on physical traits such as race, gender or age, and understand their environment through categorisation, so they make sense of the world by grouping people together according to how they look. As a result, children will most likely identify with a group of people who have a similar appearance to them, and they will become disengaged from people who appear different from them.

Parents can help their children value and appreciate diversity in everyday experiences by modelling behaviours that are open and kind toward others, such as;

It is important for children to have role models who motivate them to engage in multicultural activities. Taming Childhood aggression: What can we do about it?

Meltdowns can cause misery for the child and everyone around this child. The good news is that adults can take charge and get support to manage aggressive behaviour in ways that are effective without being shaming.

Taming the anger monster in our children is a process, often like a marathon and definitely not a sprint to the line. Whether children hit or bite because they are angry or for reasons you just don't understand, aggressive behaviour can be a normal part of child development, especially between the ages of three and nine.

Sometimes toddlers are aggressive because they lack the verbal skills to get their needs across. A child who cannot say, "Don't do that," when their sibling takes a toy out of their hands may hit or bite to express their disapproval.

If children have a tendency towards this kind of aggressive behaviour, it’s up to you to help them develop judgement, self-discipline and the ability to express their feeling in appropriate ways. The good news is that as aggressiveness can be learnt so can calmness. We can follow and reinforce some very basic strategies to help educators and parents develop the ability within our children to stay and become calm from a very young age.

Lead by example . Children need someone to look up to and learn from. Parents primary role is to lead by example, modelling the kind of behaviour that you would like your child to adopt. A value system is important.
Let your child continue being a child . A toddler is all about testing boundaries. This is the way they explore and come into their own. However, when your children are throwing tantrums or exhibiting other destructive behaviour, it is easy to forget that you are dealing with a child and that they don’t have the wisdom to model good behaviour. Therefore, allow yourself a moment and your child to be a child. However, explain to them why their reactions are not appropriate and inform them of the alternative.
Teaching your children to acknowledge early warning signs of aggressiveness . Developing an awareness of early warning signs in a child is vital to success in this process of taming anger. Explain that we all have these little signs that tell us we are fast becoming angry, like maybe talking louder, getting flushed or clenching the fists. There are different signs for different people. Making your child aware will teach them to recognize and act accordingly.
Teach your children to rethink their emotion . Parents can start by helping children understand how their emotions work. Help children to label their feelings from an early stage in life and how to manage the big waves that flood them from time to time, both in anger and in joy.
Age-appropriate techniques to tame anger . Kids need to know appropriate ways to deal with their anger. Instead of being told, “Don’t hit your brother,” explain what they can do when they feel frustrated. Say, "Next time, use your words" or "Walk away from him when you feel angry."
Praise nonaggressive behaviours . Reduce your child's aggression by setting expectations for appropriate behaviour, providing clear and consistent consequences, and praising nonaggressive behaviours.
Have consequences for misbehaviour . As much as possible, parents are encouraged to stay consistent in discipline. If your child is aggressive toward another child, provide immediate consequences. Eventually the child will associate the negative consequence with the aggression. Parents can minimize aggressive behaviour with a few techniques that include:
* By staying calm,
* Minimizing situations that can flair up in misbehaviour,
* Avoiding negotiation (don't argue or explain too much),
* Helping your child problem solve solutions in conflict situations,
* Expressing and having open communication, telling them why it is not suitable to use bad language but rather positive language,
* Making your expectations for behaviour clear.

Parenting childhood aggression is protecting them from any physical trauma, and considering their mental and psychological well-being. If your child has frequent outbursts daily for several days or weeks, or is causing physical injury to himself or others, or is being sent home by friends or the school, contact your paediatrician immediately.

O ther than that, parenting childhood aggression is part of the developmental process and most children are able to learn how to manage their anger and frustration. It may require a little patience from you, but in the end, it will be all worth it!

What do we teach our children about Conservation?

Conservation is protecting Earth's natural resources for current and future generations. Younger generations seem to have no interest in nature conservation or its importance. At Gaborone International School (GIS), we realise if we are to protect the Earth and its biological diversity as well as maintain habitats for the future, our learners need to know not only the importance of this act but also how to do it themselves.

We encourage the simple task of picking litter in their surroundings as one way of raising environmental awareness as this also creates the opportunity to talk about conservation. During some Biology lessons we task learners with finding and identifying as many animal and/or plant species as they can and commenting on the diversity in their school. This is linked to the topics in the curriculum and the practical engagement helps bring the environment and hopefully conservation closer to home and the mind.

Additionally, we engage in serious conversations about plants and animals that lands on the endangered species list such as the Tiger and our very own Giraffe. Teaching our learners about the value of all creatures, big and small is important for the future of conservation. Children are the future custodians of our planet and teaching them the value of all creatures is important step in raising environmentally aware citizens.

Promoting conservation might not be easy, but we need to try as much as possible to make our children understand the consequences of not conserving natural resources and habitats while we still can. Irreversible change to the environment is happening every day and there is no telling how much humankind may one day need of what is being lost now.

At GIS we find it imperative that the future of the Earth, our children, must be taught about conservation the environment now. Learners recently celebrated World Environment Day and participated in planting trees around the school. This was no doubt a step in the right direction in raising awareness and conservation.

In today’s modern world, our children’s safety requires a broad-based effort by the entire community, including educators at schools, students, parents, law enforcement agencies, businesses, and faith-based organsations, among others. By adopting a comprehensive approach to addressing their safety focusing on prevention, intervention, and response, communities can increase the safety and security of our children throughout Botswana.

In honouring International Drug Awareness Day, taking place on 26 June 2021, Gaborone International School (GIS), partnered with Sir Seretse Khama Airport Police (SSKA) to educate students on the impact of drugs and how to be part of the bigger picture for prevention, intervention, and response programs.

Have you ever seen a person who seems to have lost touch with reality? Unable to care for themselves and not have control over their bodily movements? Some say they are having an out of body experience while others are paranoid by the slightest details in their environment. Such individuals tend to be misusing illicit drugs.

Illicit drugs are described as highly addictive drugs that change how the brain works which ultimately alters how a person thinks and acts. These specific drugs are associated with deficits in executive functioning and psychomotor function. Being under the influence of illicit drugs affects a person’s daily functions that involve memory, flexibility in thinking as well as self-control.

A person who is under the influence of an illicit drugs could compromise their ability to perform basic tasks associated with their work. They might struggle to start a simple task and stay focused on it; find it difficult to keep track of what they are doing; fail to read a text and hold that information to be able to answer the following questions as well as be able to restrain themselves from shouting out answers. Illicit drugs can also change a person’s emotions, where a person can become verbally and physically aggressive. It's problematic for them to effectively communicate and they display non-caring behaviour.

People experience these deficits because drugs interfere with how messages in the brain are sent, received and processed. Some of these drugs mimic the brain’s chemicals and therefore can activate activity in the brain. However, due to this not being a natural chemical of the brain, it leads to inconsistent and abnormal messages being exchanged through the network of neurons. Consequently, bodily functions are affected like heart rate, breathing and sleeping which can lead to death if the person overdoses.

Overdosing and addiction are brought about by the brain of the individual using an Illicit drug starting to experience less and less pleasure from naturally rewarding activities and therefore needing to take more and more of the drug to experience euphoria. They have to take the drug to experience any normal level of pleasure and sometimes need larger amounts to produce the familiar high.

Individuals using illicit drugs are not psychologically, emotionally or physically free from them. Their lives are adversely affected. A person starts performing badly at work might lose their job due to these actions. Additionally, they can develop aggressive behaviour and start to withdraw from family and friends.

No parent, child, or family is immune to the effects of drugs. Any person can end up in trouble, even those who have made an effort to avoid it. However, the objective is to guide and foster a sense of community and connection among schools and those organisations and agencies that work together to enhance and sustain safety in your community.

GIS want to take this opportunity to thank the SSKA Police for taking time to educate our senior students on legislation regarding illicit drugs but more importantly on the topic of prevention. “We are excited to continue the partnership to raise awareness amongst all students on the dangers of drugs, crime and violence and the impact it has on individuals, families and education. Are you a decision maker? Of course you are. If not for a major corporation or start-up, at least for your family or your own life. Do you want to get face-to-face with the biggest decision maker who can improve your life and business? Look in the mirror.

This article is dedicated to all our parents and students who wants to take charge by being a more effective decision maker, whilst providing you with the effective tools to help yourself and your child navigate the process and achieving this goal.

It is crucial for young people to understand this process to help empower them to make confident, positive decisions regarding the social, emotional and physical wellbeing for themselves and those around them as they move toward independence.

Being an effective decision maker helps any person make the best choices, but more than that, it lets you decide what the choices are and, in fact, what problem is being solved. More than anything else, it puts you in charge of your life. It is probably the most important skill for success.

So, why does everybody hate making decisions? You never hear anyone say, “Yay! I have a decision to make!” Decisions are seen as stumbling blocks rather than opportunities. The best way is to approach this process is to ask the following questions:

What decision needs to be made,
What are the options,
Evaluate the options and pick the best one (pros and cons list), and
Act on your choice and see how it works. And don’t be afraid to fail.

Decision-making is both art and science. There is an entire discipline of decision science. You can get a degree on the subject. Decision science teaches you how to maximize the expected value of your utility function. What does that mean? How does this apply to real people making real decisions?

Decision science often focuses on making a choice among alternatives, yet being an effective decision maker requires much more than this. This is where the art comes in.

What is the most important problem to be solved?
What are the alternatives?
What does the future hold?
What about all these conflicting goals?

To do this well requires both courage and imagination. Pep talks help, but specific tools and techniques are better. The secret is to strike a balance.

Here are 10 tips that will help you develop, strengthen and flex your decision-making skills.

Know your goal.
Never make decisions in a bad frame of mind or in a haste.
Understand all your options.
Visualize your future, does this decision benefit your long-term goal.
Eliminate the unwanted. Making good decisions isn’t always about focusing on what you want, but sometimes about focusing what you don’t want but rather need.
While aiming for the best, remember that it is not always your only option. Sometimes taking the lesser road travelled, brings you to great success.
Don’t overthink things.
Sometimes taking your own advice, is good advice. Imagine you are speaking to a third party that needs the same advice you are about to give ‘yourself’. Sometimes removing yourself from the equation, gives you clearer perspective.
Look to others when needed. You can learn a lot from other people’s experiences.
Always trust our instinct – if it doesn’t sit well with you walk away.

On Friday the fourth of June, Botswana celebrated and recognised their dedicated educators across the country. As part of National Teachers Day, Gaborone International School (GIS) showed their appreciation with a token of gratitude.

We can never fit all our appreciation into one day, but GIS honoured each and every teaching staff member for the work they do. We all have that teacher. The one that inspired us. The one that encouraged us to ask questions, discuss topics and do the research. The one that affected and challenged our choices of a subject for future study. The one that helped us get where we are today. The one that made learning not only enjoyable but fun.

GIS acknowledge the critical role their teaching staff play shaping our children, the future leaders of our country. Their kind, patient, hard-working, dedicated, and understanding guidance that helps mould our children and lead them into positive directions do not go unnoticed.

We acknowledge that the past year our teachers had to adapt and follow strict new rules and safety protocols because of COVID-19, we as parents, all got a pretty clear glimpse into “a day in the life” of a teacher through our online classes. And we had found a greater appreciation for our teaching staff as we have seen just how much they do and how great their passion is to help our students succeed.

GIS STUDENTS SHINE AT MICROSOFT HACKATHON

Four students from Gaborone International School (GIS) took part in most recent Microsoft Hackathon in collaboration with international schools’ group AdvTech.

A hackathon is an event, usually hosted by a tech company or organization, where programmers get together for a short period of time to collaborate on a project. The participants work rapidly and often work without sleep to achieve their task, as the events generally only last 24 hours or take place over a weekend.

The GIS students joined some of the brightest minds from across the world in a daylong event, aimed to devise and plan future technologies as well as to solve problems and advance ideas by looking at the Microsoft product: Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is a collaboration app that helps teams stay organized and have conversations, all in one place. GIS uses Ms Teams for online learning and teaching. Discussions, ideas and coding techniques were shared, aiming to solve the challenges of the product and aiming for the best improvements as well as to make Ms Teams secure and more user friendly.

During the event students heard from prominent programming engineers and innovators. Participants also received mentoring to hone their craft, techniques and ideas, which were judged by a panel of software developers.

The Microsoft Hackathon is more than just an opportunity to write your own piece of code or come up with a new idea. The main idea of a hackathon was to allow the students to develop a viable solution to a real challenge. Here they receive an opportunity to create future prototypes that can become real products.

GIS students: Tadiwanashe Jedidiah Musikavanhu, Tatenda Nenhanga, Ditso Ofile Mogajane and Lethabo Mwale were selected among the best students around the globe for their future-ready solutions and innovative programming ideas. They were all awarded a Certificate of Participation and Microsoft hoodies with AdvTech logo.

Boitumelo Ketwesepe (Alumnus) returns to inspire and encourage students to be the best they can be in and out of the classroom, at her former school, GIS!

Graduated from GIS : 2012

Boitumelo Ketwesepe believes that “teachers make a lasting impression on the lives of their students, and great teachers inspire students to develop the skills they need to compete in a challenging global market.”

Certainly, she feels that her teachers at Gaborone International School (GIS) – where she graduated in 2012 – played an important role in her own life. “I’d always remember GIS with fondness. I received a great education in the most nurturing environment. My school days were spent amongst happy students and caring staff.”

Boitumelo says that she has many happy memories of her time at GIS. It was during her school days that her love of Business Studies and Economics was cultivated: she admits that these subjects were always her favourite.

After school, she enrolled at the University of Botswana to study a Bachelor Degree in Education, majoring in Business and Economics. When she graduated, she had little way of knowing that her ties with the school would remain extremely strong, but she hoped to be back as a teacher. Today she is once again roaming the hallways and sharing teaching methodologies with one of her favourite teachers Ms Lubeka. “Being back at GIS is the same, but not the same. Although the buildings haven’t changed that much the people and teaching methods has, and that is exciting.”

Thinking back on her studies, Boitumelo says that she acquired a number of attributes that have served her well in the classroom, among them tolerance, patience and an appreciation of diversity and respect for those around her. Boitumelo believes that the biggest challenge children face today is bullying and that there should be no room in the classroom or life for such bad behaviour.

A positive about Boitumelo’s chosen field is that it has enormous scope for growth. “I enjoy working with the students and sharing their excitement about their academics.” Boitumelo’s approach to teaching is learner centred. “This gives learners a choice and autonomy to take control of their own learning with the teacher of course still being the main facilitator of the process.”

Asked if she would choose the same career again, were she to have the choice, her answer is unequivocal: “Definitely!”

GIS Soccer ACE!

Women’s football continues to grow in popularity around the world, and Gaborone International School (GIS) is proud to announce that their very own fourteen-year-old Palesa Mokopakgosi was recently chosen for the u/17 National Woman Squad.

She said that she was amazed and extremely excited to be given the opportunity to play with this very talented team. “I’m grateful to be selected out of many girls for this exciting opportunity”, she expressed. She continued to say that she felt very honoured that the coach saw something in her skill and talent to allow her to be part of this dynamic and talented group of payers.

Palesa believes in hard work and embraces the life skills soccer teaches her. She believes that there is a synergy on and off the field. “Soccer teaches not only teamwork, perseverance, and decision making, that I’ll be able to apply to all aspects of my life, but also helps me to learn to weather the ups and downs of life, anticipate opportunities and how to work with my peers to solve different challenges on the field. Most of all, I appreciate how playing this game connects me with a variety of talented peers, who has a love for this sport”, she says.

Sport such as soccer is a powerful tool for engaging youngsters and by putting the focus on fun. When asked how Palesa got hooked to the sport she smiled and said: “soccer chose me”. She says that she enjoys all forms of sport. “I love to be active but the opportunity to be scouted by a soccer club and then chosen to take a larger step into this sporting code shows me that God had chosen this pathway for me and I’m really grateful.”

Palesa always shows a positive attitude when approaching a game. When preparing for a game she says that she knows that she has done the work to be physically prepared. “You need to put in the hours and practise your skills. The more you train the better your chances will be to transform your skills into talent that scouts will value for a national or international team. You will have to cultivate a growth mindset and acknowledge that there is always a skill or trend that you can learn to improve your game. Be prepared to adjust your goalpost and constantly strive to improve your skills and be prepared to learn from the best”.

Additionally, your physical training is just as important as your mental preparation. “I never go into a game thinking I am the best because I know that the people, I’m meeting on the field are probably just as good as I am or probably even better. Also, their skills will push me again to be a better player and you need a mindset that will prepare you for the ups and downs on the field. Being open-minded allows you to take criticism for what it is, a suggestion to help you improve your game. You can learn more when you listen to suggestions and discuss various options. Do not be defensive, stay positive and remember in an intense game when tempers flare, to always talk it out. If you enjoy the path of playing your favourite sport, the satisfaction will be enormous and the sacrifice will be worth it”, she exclaims.

Is it a good idea to reward your child with gadgets and money for getting good marks?

Generally, rewards or fun incentives for good behavior in children can encourage and promote that same good behavior to carry on in future, for example letting them have a sweet treat after finishing their meal which was filled with fresh vegetables. The downside is that this might lead to expectations whereby a child expects/demands to be given a sweet treat after every single meal. The question we want to explore is, can the same method be applied to grades?

There are inexpensive positive reinforcements that parents can use to promote good behavior in children especially from a young age such as clapping/cheering, giving hugs and high fives, but in reality, as kids grow older their wants and needs grow right alongside them. Children go from wanting ice cream as a reward one day, pizza on the next, and suddenly they’ll be asking for money or gadgets in exchange for working hard in school for getting A’s and B’s.

Although many parents may oppose this, research has shown that paying kids for good grades often DOES improve them. It can be a strong sense of motivation for learners to know that at the end of the term they’ll receive P100 for every A on their report card. However, the same article states that this can go either way and quotes Alfie Kohn, author of Punished by Rewards, saying “the bigger the reward, the more damage it does’ by encouraging students to focus on the goodies, not the learning. ‘The more you use cell phones, T-shirts, money or whatever, the more you undermine motivation for becoming engaged and prolific learners”.

Now here’s the twist that parents can apply, instead of giving them hard cash, let your child open their own savings account. A lot of children, especially around the preadolescent age and up, will find this fascinating as it will give them a sense of being responsible and that they’re maturing into young adults. Alternatively, parents can instill the spirit of giving in their children at this young age, by asking them to donate to the less fortunate or a charity or their choice.

Overall, this can still be a good idea because when the student gets paid by their parents, it presents another opportunity for the parent to teach them how to spend money – financial literacy.

The Importance of Self-Discipline in Sports

Have you ever given thought to why good athletes get suspended or get banned from playing their sports disciplines? When joining a sport disciplinary, the first thing that is required from you as an athlete is self-discipline.

Self-discipline is essential for success in sports. It is also instrumental to succeeding in other areas of life. Athletes who are disciplined are able to focus on their goals, develop a strong work ethic, and be consistent in their training. They are also more likely to follow the rules and regulations of their sport, which helps to ensure fairness and consistency for all participants.

Signs that your child is being bullied or is the bully (in school or online)

Bullying is when someone acts aggressively and out of character towards a peer. The offences are normally repeated and could cause serious harm to the bullied and the bully, if left unresolved. In a school setting, students of all grades can bully or be bullied by fellow students.

Any student can become a target regardless of age, grade, gender, race, religion and socio-economic status. Bullying in schools can take place during or after school hours and anywhere in the school premises. Educators in schools need to be vigilant to pick up signs of bullying, as bullying can take place in the classroom, school hall, at the tuck shop, playgrounds, toilets and on the bus.

There are four main ways in which bullying takes place:

Physical bullying: This involves an unwanted direct contact between the bully and the one being bullied such as hitting, kicking, fighting, spitting, pushing, pinching, tripping, damaging someone’s school bag etc.
Cyberbullying: This is an aggressive behavior that takes place online (on the internet, social media) during which individuals hurt classmates who cannot easily defend themselves by using cellphones or computers. They use text messages, e-mails, online social networks, chatrooms, Twitter, Instagram or blogs to tarnish the image of another person.
Verbal bullying: This is the type of bullying that is done through speaking and spreading negative information about someone e.g. teasing, name-calling, taunting, tormenting, threatening to cause harm, harassing, commenting negatively on someone’s looks, clothes, body, use of offensive language, etc.
Emotional bullying: This is the form of bullying that causes damage to a victim’s emotional well-being e.g. ignoring a classmate on purpose, provoking other students, spreading malicious rumors about a classmate, getting other students to ‘gang up’ on others, etc.

At Gaborone International School, we believe it is important for parents and educators to work together to identify whether a learner is being bullied or is a bully. The lists below are not exhaustive.

Signs that your child is being bullied

grades declining,
sudden loss of friends,
loss of interest in schoolwork,
changes in eating habits,
frequent nightmares,
frequent headaches or stomach aches,
faking illness,
feeling helpless, not wanting to go to school,
talking about suicide, etc.
Signs that your child may be a bully
increasingly being aggressive,
having friends who bully others,
doesn’t accept responsibility for one’s actions,
blames others for one’s problems,
frequently sent to the principal’s office etc.

Educating children about bullying and its impact on others is of utmost importance for learners to thrive in a safe environment. It is therefore important that the issue of bullying be discussed by parents at home and educators make a concerted effort to curb its prevalence in schools. It is also important for both school and parents to educate learners on responsible usage of mobile phones and the internet.

Where there is suspicion of bullying taking place, it is important for parents to alert the school and educators also to seek an audience with parents whose children may be involved.

Learners should be encouraged to report cases of bullying.

Sharing information with the parents of our pupils is one of the ways we can ensure that they’re involved in their child’s development every step of the way. Here’s how your child adjusts to each stage of life and what you can do to help them along the way.

Two years of age

Our full-day creche is perfect for children as young as two years old. At this age, they are curious but also fearful and quite sensitive to separation from parents and their home environments. This means that routine is crucial for getting them settled. Although quite prone to separation anxiety at this stage of development, they need to discover their world. This means learning, playing and exploring. As a result, going to school is ideal for helping your child flourish and pave a sound foundation for their education.

Between the ages of three and five

This is also known as the busy period where your child learns to cut, draw, sing and express themselves. At school, they will be learning about numbers, letters, shapes and directions. This means that you should be reiterating these at home to make sure your child remembers them. There are also a lot of questions asked at this stage as your little one attempts to reason with the workings of the world. You should encourage this curiosity and answer questions to the best of your ability and in a way that they will understand.

Although you might want to push learning activities at home, make sure you give your child ample time to play. At this age, they learn a great deal from playing. Reinforce things that your child does well in order to boost their self-esteem.

From six to eight

Your child has now started junior school and your baby has blossomed overnight. At this stage, they’re navigating homework, breaktimes and social relationships with their friends. They will have good, bad and even frustrating days. Some might be eager to go to school each day, whilst others are certainly more overwhelmed. Although “big school” can seem like a scary prospect, a good routine is a fantastic way to make the transition easier. Help your child get ready for the next day the night before and try and foster a healthy mindset to things like homework and extra murals. Be consistent with discipline at this stage so that you can set the tone for how they ought to behave.

Nine to eleven

As they approach senior school level, children at this age walk the line between being little and rather mature. Some might even be starting puberty which is of course accompanied by lots of changes. At this age, children are able to think in a logical way and might enjoy tasks that incorporate some sort of responsibility. Parents should attempt to give them manageable tasks that hone their understanding of what it means to be responsible. Things like chores or caring for a pet or plant are a good starting point. Communication at this stage is key, particularly when things like puberty begin. Try and make sure the lines of communication are healthy and open ones so that your child is more likely to reach out to you if need be.

Twelve and thirteen

When your child becomes a teenager, you’ll be dealing with a different person from day to day. As they go through puberty and become more independent, they find their voice and form very strong opinions. Your child needs to know that they have your support, which means communicating and encouraging them at every crossroad. There might even be a girlfriend or boyfriend at this stage so be prepared.

The Importance of Balance

Balance is the ability to maintain the body’s centre of mass over its base of support. A properly functioning balance system allows humans to see clearly while moving, identify location with respect to gravity, determine direction and speed of movement, and make automatic postural adjustments to maintain posture and stability in various conditions and activities.

Balance is achieved and maintained by a complex set of sensorimotor control systems that include sensory input from vision (sight), proprioception (touch), and the vestibular system (motion, equilibrium, spatial orientation); integration of that sensory input; and motor output to the eye and body muscles.

Balance begins in infancy as babies begin to hold their heads up and raise themselves up on their arms. It develops steadily with opportunities to run, jump, climb, balance and play. Development stabilises at approximately 10-11 years. There are balance milestones to achieve by certain ages. Eg, a child should be able to balance on one leg for more than 12 seconds by the age of 5.5 years. At pre-school girls appear to have slightly better balance than boys.

Balance is basic to physical fitness as it is the ability to maintain and control body position while stationary or moving.

Good balance and core muscle tone enables a child to sit at a desk for academic tasks and to persevere for reasonable periods of time. This is called static balance. Without it the child will fidget, rock on the chair and need frequent excuses to stand and walk.

Dynamic balance is the ability to maintain postural control during movement so is important to all sport and dance.

Giving children lots of time to play freely outside, to climb, swing and roll, is essential for developing good balance and posture.
