Beyond Rules: Raising Responsible & Accountable Adults

Gaborone International School brought parents together for Beyond Rules:

Raising Responsible & Accountable Adults, a conversation about the role of discipline in helping young people develop sound judgement, accountability and character.

Discipline is often understood through rules and consequences. But raising responsible young people requires us to look beyond what happens when a rule is broken and consider the lesson we want the child to take forward.

At GIS, we believe discipline should help learners understand what happened, why it matters and what needs to change. Consequences, where appropriate, are therefore not simply about punishment. They provide an opportunity for reflection, accountability and growth, helping young people understand that their choices have an impact on themselves and others.

This is particularly important in a world where children are navigating influences far beyond the school gates. Friendships, social media and digital communication all present choices that require judgement, self-awareness and responsibility.

The partnership between school and home is essential in helping children develop these qualities. When parents and educators reinforce clear expectations, model responsible behaviour and create space for honest conversations, children are better equipped to move from simply following rules to understanding the values behind them.

This is supported at GIS by having a dedicated Deputy Principal of Discipline as part of our school leadership. The role is not simply to respond when things go wrong, but to help create a culture where accountability, responsibility and respect are part of everyday school life, while working with learners and families to support positive development.

Ultimately, the goal of discipline is not to raise young people who are afraid of consequences. It is to raise young adults who can make responsible choices when there is no one watching.

Beyond rules, we are helping learners develop the character to choose wisely.

My child is shy to ask for anything, and I realised that the teacher at his previous school was not welcoming or friendly to the children.
